The museum is undertaking an ambitious renovation project, with one of its main goals being the creation of a hall entirely dedicated to the masterpiece.
A radical change that promises to enhance the visitor experience and better preserve the iconic work of Renaissance art and world painting. Currently displayed in the Salle des États, the Mona Lisa, one of the most visited artworks at the Louvre, attracts an enormous number of visitors. The daily influx of people eager to see it often makes it difficult to fully appreciate its beauty, which has captivated millions since its arrival at the Parisian museum in 1797.

With the new renovation, however, the Mona Lisa will be moved to a dedicated hall located beneath the Cour Carrée, the historical section of the museum. This relocation will not only allow the masterpiece to be displayed in a more suitable environment but also improve accessibility with an independent entrance through the Colonnade Perrault, on the eastern side of the museum. This way, visitors will be able to admire the painting in a quieter and more intimate setting, free from the distractions of large crowds. The dedicated entrance will also help reduce visitor congestion in the Pyramid area.
The renovation also includes the creation of a large entrance area designed to manage visitor flow in a more orderly manner. Access to the Mona Lisa‘s new hall will require an additional ticket, which will help regulate the number of people viewing the painting, ensuring a more focused and immersive experience.
A masterpiece with a fascinating history
The Mona Lisa is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous masterpieces, painted between 1503 and 1506. The portrait is renowned for its enigmatic smile and the sfumato technique, which gives the subject’s face an unprecedented level of realism. The woman depicted is believed to be Lisa Gherardini, a Florentine noblewoman and the wife of a silk merchant, Francesco del Giocondo.
The Mona Lisa has an extraordinary history that has made it a global icon, not only for its artistic beauty but also for the events surrounding it. In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by an Italian, Vincenzo Peruggia, who wanted it to be admired in Italy. The painting was recovered two years later, and from that moment, its fame grew even further, making it one of the most recognized and admired artworks of all time.
With the creation of a separate hall and a new entrance, the experience of viewing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre will be transformed. Not only will this allow for a more comfortable and immersive observation of the masterpiece, but it will also help visitors connect with the painting in a more serene and personal way.
Louvre, Nouvelle Renaissance
The renovation initiative, called Louvre, Nouvelle Renaissance, involves a total investment of between 700 and 800 million euros. Funding for the project will primarily come from the museum’s own resources, ticket sales, sponsorships, and rights associated with the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Thanks to this extensive financial plan, the renovation of the Louvre will not place a burden on French taxpayers, as it will be supported by private funds and strategic investments.
The renovation work is expected to be completed by 2031, and in the meantime, visitors to the Louvre will experience a series of changes that will introduce them to a new and enhanced museum experience.
