Faenza and La Spezia have been selected by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to represent Italy in the candidacy for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This prestigious designation recognizes the commitment of both cities to promoting creativity, cultural innovation, and the role of art and design in sustainable urban development.
Faenza: tradition and innovation in ceramics
Faenza, located in the Emilia-Romagna region, is internationally renowned for its long-standing tradition in ceramic production. The term “faience,” used in various languages to refer to majolica, originates from the city, attesting to its historic role in the sector.
The city hosts the renowned International Museum of Ceramics, which houses one of the world’s most important collections of ceramic artifacts, spanning from ancient Mediterranean civilizations to contemporary works. Every year, Faenza welcomes artists and artisans from around the world through events like Argillà, the ceramics festival that attracts exhibitors and visitors from across the globe. Faenza’s candidacy for the UNESCO network takes on particular significance as the city was severely affected by the 2023 flood. This recognition would provide an opportunity to revitalize the area by leveraging creativity and craftsmanship—key elements of the city’s identity.
La Spezia: design and culture at the core of development
La Spezia, an important port city in Liguria, stands out for its cultural dynamism and strong connection to design and innovation. With a long industrial and maritime tradition, La Spezia has transformed itself over the years into a cultural hub, thanks to institutions such as CAMeC (Center for Modern and Contemporary Art) and the Naval Museum, which showcases the evolution of Italian navigation and shipbuilding. The city has distinguished itself through initiatives aimed at encouraging citizen participation in cultural life, promoting events related to design and urban creativity. La Spezia’s candidacy as a UNESCO Creative City represents a great opportunity to strengthen its role on the international stage and further enhance the synergy between art, innovation, and sustainable development.
The value of the UNESCO Creative Cities network
Established in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network aims to promote cooperation among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic element for urban development. Admission to this network offers cities the opportunity to share experiences, attract investment in the creative sector, and promote cultural tourism. If accepted, Faenza and La Spezia would join other Italian cities already recognized, such as Bologna for music, Turin for design, and Carrara for artistic craftsmanship. This selection represents another acknowledgment of Italian culture, demonstrating how creativity can serve as a driving force for resilience and growth in local communities.
