As Expo 2025 in Osaka approaches—scheduled to run from April 13 to October 13—Italy is preparing to unveil its national pavilion: an architectural masterpiece that blends ancient art, contemporary installations, and cutting-edge technology. Designed by architect Mario Cucinella, the Italian Pavilion draws inspiration from the Renaissance concept of the “Ideal City,” reimagined through a modern lens to showcase the excellence of Italy in all its dimensions. The Italian Pavilion presents itself as a grand portico enclosing a central theatre, symbolizing a “place of imagination” and Italian cultural identity. The structure, fully demountable and partially built with timber, is conceived to be both environmentally friendly and sustainable. The rooftop features a classic Italian hanging garden, complete with a green maze reminiscent of historical Italian landscapes, offering visitors an immersive experience of nature and art.
Art that regenerates life
The central theme of the Pavilion, “Art Regenerates Life,” is expressed through a curated exhibition path celebrating the best of Italian craftsmanship and creativity. Among the highlights is the Farnese Atlas, one of the most important marble sculptures from the Naples National Archaeological Museum, on display in Asia for the very first time. This artwork symbolizes continuity between past and future and is featured alongside daily live events that showcase Italian beauty and innovation.
The Italian Pavilion is not just an homage to cultural heritage—it’s a living lab where tradition meets technological advancement. Visitors will encounter innovative solutions across multiple sectors: from sustainable energy through the green steel project by the Danieli Group, to AI-powered material recycling systems developed by Ganiga. Italy’s commitment to science and tech is also represented by the participation of the Italian Space Agency and the National Research Hub of La Spezia. Strategically positioned near the Grand Ring—the symbolic heart of Expo designed by architect Sou Fujimoto—the Italian Pavilion aims to serve as a global ambassador for sustainable growth and the internationalization of Italian enterprises and regions.
