Every year for 3 months, the impressive flowering of the vegetation colors the plateau in the province of Perugia
Castelluccio di Norcia is in the heart of Valnerina, inside the in the Monti Sibillini National Park. This small village, in the province of Perugia, is perched on the top of a hill in the middle of a large plateau at an altitude of 1452 meters. Framed by the majestic Sibillini Mountains, it is the center-piece of a 15-square-kilometer canvas. Here, every year, between May and July, Mother Nature enlivens the plains turning them into a triumph of multicolored shades through the ‘Fioritura’ (Flowering).
The area includes the three plains that divided the plateau into three sections: Pian Grande, Pian Piccolo, and Pian Perduto. All year round, Castelluccio and its plains offer a lovely view. However, this is absolutelly breathtaking when countless flowers bloom in the plateau. It is a burst of colors. Shades range from yellow to red, from violet to white.
They are offered by the flowers of various different plants. There are the lentils – one of the most typical local products -, gentianella, poppies, narcissuses, violets, asphodels, Eugeniae violet, clovers, oxalis and many more. For many weeks the ever-changing incredible mosaic of colours breaks the chromatic monotony of the fields filling the eyes and the heart of wonder. Depending on the weather and on the season, and considering that each species of flora requires different conditions to blossom, the scenary is never the same with the passing of the days.
In addition, Castelluccio is recognized as the homeland of outdoor sports.
Over the years, the little town between Umbria and Marche has became the point of reference for those who love them. And the only thing that beats admiring the ‘Fioritura’ painting is to enter it. Hiking, paragliding, mountain biking, archery, but also horse, donkeys and mules riding, the choice is yours.
