The 48 episodes of the first four seasons available with spinoff movie The Immortal, while waiting for the fifth season
The TV series based on Roberto Saviano’s bestseller is among the most loved ones in the US. However, the American public had the opportunity to watch only two of the four seasons of Gomorrah. The series’ rights belonged to TWC, Harvey Weinstein’s company that filed for bankruptcy after the entrepreneur’s sex scandal. Thus, until now, there was no US distribution agreement for seasons three and four. Finally, HBO Max secured the rights for all the 48 episodes of the first four seasons. But it will also stream the forthcoming fifth one. Moreover, it acquired the rights to the spinoff movie The Immortal.
Directed by Marco D’Amato, the feature acts as a bridge between the fourth and fifth eagerly awaited season.
Produced by Sky and Cattleya, Gomorrah confirms its position as the most international of the Italian TV series. It was among the very first international productions to show that “local is the new global” and that local stories can really become universal. Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said: “We can’t wait to offer the American public the chance to immerse themselves in the stories of this jewel of international seriality.”
The debut of the series on HBO Max confirms and enhances the potential of a product able to speak the language of the best serials in the world. “Gomorrah could immediately go beyond national borders, establishing itself as a universal genre story,” Nicola Maccanico, EVP programming Sky Italia. “We are very proud to see this Italian jewel make its debut on the prestigious stage of HBO Max.” For Riccardo Tozzi, president of Cattleya, the series’ debut on Warner Media’s proprietary streaming platform represents “the culmination of its incredible journey on a global scale” and sends “a very positive signal to the entire Italian audiovisual industry.”
