At the end of July, Luca Guadagnino, the director of ‘Call me by your name‘ and ‘Suspiria‘, will start shooting his first TV series. Co-written by Paolo Giordano, Francesca Manieri, and Guadagnino himself, the series titled ‘We are who we are‘ is the coming of age story of two teenagers, Caitlin and Fraser, who, together with their families of soldiers and civilians, live on an American military base in Italy.
In this little corner of United States within the Italian borders, the series presents the friendships, first loves, struggles, and mysteries that characterize the lives of teenagers all over the world, but that here are influenced by the peculiar setting. The cast of very young performers includes the veteran Chloë Sevigny and the daughter of Martin Scorsese, Francesca, who, so far, only appeared in her father’s films and a film by her sister Domenica Cameron-Scorsese. The others are Jack Dylan Grazer, Alice Braga, Jordan Kristine Seamón, Kid Cudi, Faith Alabi, Spence Moore II, Ben Taylor, Corey Knight, Tom Mercier, and Sebastiano Pigazzi.
In an interview with Repubblica, Guadagnino said: “Paolo Giordano and Francesca Manieri have written this wonderful painting of adolescents in a military base in Italy. The work with them has taken a form that truly satisfies me.” He continued pointing out the separation between his work for the big and small screen: ”It is something I do for the TV and with the TV, without any intention of making movies with the TV and then I am very interested in talking about today’s kids in such an unprecedented scenario for me as the military world is.”
The Sky-HBO series will consist of 8 episodes produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside. The executive producers are Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Luca Guadagnino, Nick Hall, Sean Conway, Riccardo Neri, and Francesco Melzi d’Eril. While the international distributor is Fremantle.
