Theater, music, dance: the 2019 Romaeuropa Festival is a hymn to the arts used as a tool for reflection. Like every year, since 1980, Rome hosts this multi-disciplinary art festival with the participation of famous artists from all over the world. This year, the Romaeuropa Festival opened on September 17th and it will go on until November 24th with dance, music and theater performances taking place in 20 different locations scattered throughout the capital.
The theme of this 34th edition – suggested by the President of the Romaeuropa Foundation Monique Veaute and elaborated by the General and Artistic Director Fabrizio Grifasi – is “Landscape. A panorama to discover and to cross ”. An invitation to experience the event as if it was a geographical map of real and virtual places in which the representation are the points of reference that guide the mind to consider and ponder current events. Thus, many are the contemporary dancers that take to the stage themes like equality, war, and political issues. With the same frame of mind, but very different tools, theater performances focus on current events addressing urgent and complex matters through the voice of internationally acclaimed directors. Milo Rau, to mention one, will present, from September 23rd to 25th, at the Teatro Argentina, ‘Orestes in Mosul’, a reflection on the themes of revenge, forgiveness, and justice through the tragedy of Aeschylus into the Iraqi context of the war against ISIS.
Then there is the enveloping concert calendar that features artists such as the Sudanese Alsarah and the Nubatones – retro-pop music icons -, J.P. Bimeni – the new star of soul music -, Mayra Andrade from Cape Verde – considered the heir of Cesária Évora -, the Egyptian Abdullah Miniawy – with his fusion of jazz, rock, electronics, and spoken words -, and Lubomyr Melnyk – considered the fastest pianist in the world. On November 24th, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, there will be a series of concerts of Ryuichi Sakamoto, who will present a tribute to director Bernardo Bertolucci, and Christian Fennesz with the launch of his latest album “Agorà“.
