The Italian soccer national team releases the new ‘renaissance’ kit inspired by a shirt they wore in 1954
On Saturday, Roberto Mancini’s team will take on Greece in a Euro 2020 qualifier at the Stadio Olimpico. It will also be the occasion for fans to see the Azzurri in their newly-released green ‘renaissance‘ jersey.
The ‘renaissance‘ kit, designed by Puma, is inspired by a jersey the Azzurri once wore in 1954 – when they beat Argentina 2-0 at the Olimpico. It is also a way to celebrate a new generation of young stars that Italy’s successes such as Nicolò Zaniolo and Federico Chiesa.
The kit features a predominantly emerald green color throughout, with a navy collar and matching detail on the sleeves.
On the other hand, the Puma’s logo and the team’s badge in gold. Interwoven in the design is also a renaissance mosaic pattern, which is a tribute to Italy’s rich history.
According to FIGC: “The graphics are inspired by the Renaissance; a celebration of the past, present and, future of Italian culture. The kit is part of a larger collection characterized by exclusive Renaissance graphics. It is inspired by the Renaissance period and celebrates the many young talents who are becoming increasingly protagonists of the Azzurri’s successes.”
Most soccer fans associate the Italian national teams with blue and white kits, hence the name ‘Azzurri‘, which in Italian means blue.
However, in the years, the youth teams have often worn green in home games, while the blue remained for a long time an exclusive of the National senior.
All said, it is undeniable that the new kit has whipped up a storm on social media, with fans taking time out to comment on the new designs.
