The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy voted ‘Dante’ in New York as the overall winner
The World’s 50 Best Bars list is compiled by votes from The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy. It comprises more than 520 drinks experts, including renowned bartenders and consultants, drinks writers and cocktail specialists from around the world. The newly-issued 2019 ranking crowned ‘Dante‘ in New York as the overall winner. This Italian-style aperitivo bar has claimed the World’s Best Bar Award, jumping eight places from 2018.
‘Dante‘ has been a beacon for the community of Greenwich Village since it opened its doors in 1915. Originally it was a local meeting place where Italian immigrants would gather over espresso and talk of home and politics. During the years, it has become increasingly popular also with celebrities such as Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Seinfeld, and Bob Dylan, who have all found solace in its relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere.
The awards organizers motivated their choice affirming that “’Dante‘ serves superb coffee and cocktails, as well as high-quality food, becoming an international drinks destination at the same time as retaining a buzzing neighborhood bar vibe.”
The Italian natural incline to excellence has however pervaded the whole ranking.
The silver medal went to ‘The Connaught‘ in London, managed by the Italians Agostino Perrone and Giorgio Bargiani. In the top 50 ranking there are also the Milanese ‘1930‘ (44th) and the Roman speakeasy ‘Jerry Thomas‘ (50th). While in the full Top 100 ranking for 2019 there are Rome’s ‘Baccano’ (70th) and ‘Nottingham Forest’ (86th) in Milan. Noteworthy also the Roman ‘Drink Kong’ (82nd), named ‘Campari One To Watch’, a rising star bar on the international fine-drinking scene.
