The best Italian restaurants according to L’Espresso

Vizzari and his team reviewed thousands of restaurant to guide food lovers on a delicious tour 

L’Espresso presented ‘I Ristoranti d’Italia 2020′ edited by Enzo Vizzari. Over the years, this publication has become an undisputed reference point of Italian cuisine. And, as usual, also the 42nd edition of the guide selected the very best of Italy’s restaurants and pizzerias. The new guide does not just present a picture of the world of Italian dining, but the very best of Italy’s leading restaurants. After having tested thousands of restaurants, pizzerias, and trattorias, the guide included over 2200 in its many categories. 

The most prestious category is dedicated to the ‘Golden hat‘ restaurants, new classics that significantly contributed to changing the Italian cuisine. The new entries here are ‘Da Vittorio‘ in Brusaporto (Bergamo) and ‘La Pergola‘ in Rome.

They join the confirmations from the previous edition: ‘Caino’ in Montemerano (Grosseto), ‘Casa Vissani’ in Baschi (Terni), ‘Colline Ciociare’ in Acuto (Frosinone), ‘Dal Pescatore Santini’ in Canneto sull’Oglio (Mantova), ‘Don Alfonso 1890’ in Sant ‘Agata Sui Due Gulfi (Naples), ‘Enoteca Pinchiorri’ in Florence, ‘Lorenzo’ in Forte dei Marmi (Lucca), ‘Miramonti L’altro’ in Concesio (Brescia), ‘Romano’ in Viareggio (Lucca), and ‘San Domenico’ in Imola.

Top restaurants are awarded ‘hats’ with a maximum of 5 for the absolute bests. Throughout the Bel Paese  there are 10 restaurants with ‘5 hats’, 27 with ‘4 hats’, 79 with ‘3 hats’, 213 with ‘2 hats’, and 577 with ‘one hat’. There are also 100 pizzerias in a dedicated section, of which 32 have been awarded ‘3 pizzas’.

Among the special awards, ‘Lunch of the year’ went to ‘Lido 84’ in Gardone Rivera (Brescia), ‘Trattoria of the year’ to ‘La Brinca’ in Ne (Genova).

‘Young Chef of year’ to Paolo Griffa of ‘Grand Hotel Royal golf-Petit Royal’ in Courmayeur (Verona). ‘Woman Chef of the year’ to Alessandra Del Favero of ‘Aga Hotel Villa Trieste’ in San Vito di Cadore (Belluno). ‘Sustainable Restaurant of the year’ to ‘Joia’ of Milan.
