Rome celebrates the world of cinema with a new dedicated museum

lIn December, the new MIAC will welcome visitors to an immersive and interactive experience

The Roman Cinecitttà film studios are about to open to the public a new audiovisual museum dedicated to the world of Italian cinema. The Museo Italiano dell’Audiovisivo e del Cinema (MIAC) – Italian Audiovisual and Cinema Museum – will open its gates in December. The location is a 1,650-sqm site that once housed the Cinecittà printing and development laboratory.

Thanks  to a collaboration between Istituto Luce, the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, and Teche Rai, on display will be a rich audiovisual archive. The museum will offer visitors an immersive and interactive experience celebrating 120 years of Italian film and Italian history. In fact, TV and audio-visual media will be part of it too. There will be films and stills coming from major national archives and cinematheques, video installations, audio materials, props, texts, and machines. It will also host temporary exhibitions, a library, and a video library, as well as didactic workshops.

Roberto Cicutto, CEO of Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, stated: “The new MIAC will open in the former print labs by the end of the year. The multi-functional museum covers an area of 4,000 square meters and will host a permanent exhibition. This aims to offer a spectacular and immersive experience in the Italian imaginary of the 20th and 21st century through cinematic lenses.”

A plunge into the Italian imagination, a journey through the history of the country through the images, sounds, and music that have made our cinema great.” This is how  the Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism Dario Franceschini described the MIAC.

Adding that it will make it possible to “experience the great history of Italian cinema in a new and engaging way.”
