August 11-21, 2022, Rome will host 1500 swimming and diving athletes from 52 nations competing for 222 medals
Ligue Europeenne de Natation (LEN) announced that the 36th edition of the European swimming championships will take place in Rome on August 11th-21st, 2022. And it will be the fifth time of a historic event of swimming disciplines in Rome. In fact, the 1960 Olympics, and the 1994 and 2009 World swimming championships took place there.
About 1500 athletes representing 52 nations will participate in 74 finals with 222 medals up for grabs. The media should be present with over 800 operators for a total of 100 thousand spectators in the stands and 200 million viewers. The whole regional area will welcome the event. The Parco del Foro Italico will host the district market from the Stadio del Nuoto to the Centrale del Tennis. The Stadio del Nuoto will host swimming and diving competitions. While a removable for synchronized swimming will be set up at the Centrale del Tennis.
President of Federarazione Italian Nuoto (FIN) and president of LEN Paolo Barelli expressed his satisfaction in both roles.
As FIN’s president, he commented: “We are enthusiastic, satisfied and ready to take on this new challenge. I would like to thank the Government, the Municipality, the Region, and Sport and Health, without whom it would have been impossible to present a sustainable candidacy; the press that supported us along the way; and the societies that are responsible for the growth of our athletes and our international successes and, thus, of our credibility.” Adding, “As president of Len, instead, I would like to thank the administrations involved for presenting a candidacy that covers all the points required by the bureau. And which will allow the European league and the continental movement to set the championship in Rome, a historic and prestigious sports venue and an extremely touristic one.”
