In Gubbio, record-breaking Christmas tree to be lit from Bethlehem

Covering an area of 30 football fields, it is in the Guinness Book of World Records since 1991

In 1991, it entered the Guinness Book of World Records as “The World’s Largest Christmas Tree”. It is the illumination in the shape of a Christmas tree that every year, since 1981, illuminates Gubbio in the province of Perugia. Like every year, the imposing light installation will be lit on December 7th. However, for this 38th edition, the remote control light switch will be in the grotto of the Church of the Nativity.

During a special lighting ceremony, the Custos of the Holy Land Father Francesco Patton will activate the switch in Bethlehem. Next to him, there will be the deputy mayor of Gubbio, Alessia Tasso and the vice-president of the ‘World’s Largest Christmas Tree’ committee Francesco Ragnacci.

The public in Gubbio will be able to watch the procedure in streaming and will then admire the side of Mount Ingino shine.

Among them, there will be the mayor of Gubbio, Filippo Mario Stirati, the mayor of Bethlehem, Tony Salman; with them also  father Ibrahim Faltas, director of the schools of the Holy Land and member of the governing body of the Franciscan Custody.

The record-breaking Christmas tree has led lights that run on 8 km of cables, covering an area equal to 30 football fields. It has a base of 450 meters and a height of 750 meters. Running from the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo along the slopes of Mount Ingino. It consists of 200 lights for the star, 260 for the shape of the tree, and 270 multicolored LEDs as decorations. The installation will remain on until January 12th, 2020.
