In seven years the Italian actor went from ‘European Shooting Star’ to judge of the competition
The 70th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival will take place from February 20 to March 1. As usual, an international jury will decide who will receive the Golden Bear and Silver Bears of the 2020 Berlinale Competition. The Jury President this year will be film and theatre actor Jeremy Irons.
### He will be leading the team of six judges among whom there is young Italian actor Luca Marinelli.
Born in Rome in 1984, Marinelli graduated from the renowned Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica Silvio D’Amico in his hometown. His first theatre engagement was with Carlo Cecchi. However, he became well-known to the public with the leading in Saverio Costanzo’s movie ‘The Solitude of Prime Numbers’, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2010. Subsequently, in 2013, the Berlinale honored him as European Shooting Star and he received several nominations for important Italian prizes for his performance in Virzi’s ‘Every Blessed Day’. Among Marinelli’s other standout roles there was the one ins Claudio Caligari’s ‘Don’t Be Bad’, which represented Italy at the Oscars in 2016. In the same year, he received the David di Donatello Award for Best Supporting Actor for ‘They Call Me Jeeg’ by Gabriele Mainetti.
While in 2017, he was in ‘A Private Affair’ directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Most recently, he excelled under the direction of Pietro Marcello in ‘Martin Eden’, for which he won the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival in 2019.
Marinelli will sit on the jury alongside Academy Award nominee Bérénice Bejo, producer Bettina Brokemper, director Annemarie Jacir, director Kenneth Lonergan, and director Kleber Mendonça Filho. The Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement has already been awarded to actress Helen Mirren.
