MiBACT to publish the first Italian map illustrating the census of murals and graffiti

It is called ‘Creatività urbana in Italia‘ (Urban Creativity in Italy) and it is the new project of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBaCT). Through the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity (DGCC), it will bring together the vast Italian heritage of outdoor contemporary artworks. On top of a mapping, it will also be the first scientific investigation on the urban creativity in the Belpaese, with an extensive survey on the entire national territory.

To carry out the project MiBACT signed an agreement with  Inward – National Observatory on Urban Creativity, which will carry out the detailed investigation. Since 2004, Inward (International Network on Writing Art Research and Development) has been involved in research and development of urban creativity.

It considers street art, urban design, graffiti, and wall painting in the public, private, non-profit, and international sectors.

Thus, its team of researchers and teachers will compose the scientific committee of Urban Creativity in Italy. They will have the task of studying and disseminating knowledge on the growing phenomenon of street art. Not just graffiti, but all related forms of expression: from social criticism murals to urban design.

DGCC’s director Margherita Guccione said: “It is essential to have a clear and precise picture on the subject. And we are pleased to have started with Inward this program that has an important exploratory and cognitive value.” She also pointed out that with the project DGCC aims to signal its consideration and interest  for this complex and dynamic reality. A reality that, although under everyone’s eyes, “needs cognitive attention in various aspects.”
