“I, Ennio Morricone, am dead”, the goodbye of the Oscar-winning composer

The genius that made the history of cinema wrote his own obituary and ordered private funerals

Ennio Morricone doesn’t need any introduction. Being one of the greatest and most brilliant soundtrack composers of all times, his masterpieces has moved millions of people. In 2007, he received an honorary Academy Awards for Lifetime Achievement. In 2016, a second Oscar for the scores of Quentin Tarantino’s film ‘The Hateful Eight.’ And, throughout his long career, he collected uncountable awards received on stages all over the world. Sadly, the fascinating journey of this great artist came to a standstill when he died yesterday, July 6, 2020, in a clinic in Rome after breaking his femur 10 days ago. He was 91.

Morricone had the great ability to find the perfect balance between artistic freedom and scripts limitations. And even the limitations imposed by death did not stop him to fully express his essence.

In fact, before his departure, he had written his own obituary.

I, Ennio Morricone, am dead. In this way, I announce it to all my friends who have always been close to me and also to those a little far away, to whom I say goodbye with great affection. Impossible to name them all. But a special memory is for Peppuccio and Roberta, fraternal friends very present in these last years of our life. There is only one reason that pushes me to say goodbye to everyone like this and to have a private funeral: I don’t want to disturb.

I say goodbye with much affection to Ines, Laura, Sara, Enzo, and Norbert for having shared with me and my family most of my life. I want to remember with love my sisters Adriana, Maria, and Franca and their loved ones and let them know how much I loved them. A full, deep, and intense goodbye to my children, Marco, Alessandra, Andrea, and Giovanni, my daughter-in-law Monica, and my grandchildren Francesca, Valentina, Francesco, and Luca. I hope they understand how much I loved them. Last but not least, Maria. To her, I renew the extraordinary love that has kept us together and that I regret to abandon. To her the most painful goodbye.
