San Carlo Theater in Naples, founded in 1737, will be streaming Cavalleria Rusticana on Facebook
The Real Teatro di San Carlo (San Carlo Royal Theater), the famous Neapolitan opera house, is better known as Teatro di San Carlo. Founded in 1737 and UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, it is the oldest continuously active opera house in the world. It is also one of the largest theaters in Italy and it can seat 1,386 people. However, to enjoy the opening of its 2020/21 season opera lovers won’t have to travel to Naples. In fact, for the occasion, Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” will be streamed on Facebook until December 7th.
The San Carlo’s orchestra is conducted by Juraj Valuha and the cast includes some of the greatest voices of our time. Elina Garana, in the role of Santuzza, and Jonas Kaufmann, Turiddu, are on stage together for the first time. With them. there are Claudio Sgura as Alfio, Elena Zilio as Mamma Lucia, and Maria Agresta as Lola. While the Master of the Teatro di San Carlo’s chorus is Gea Garattini Ansini.

Thanks to a partnership with the social media giant, for the first time, the Neapolitan theater brings a paid opera event to an international level. Since December 4th, users have the unique opportunity to watch the premiere of the opera season from the comfort of their home, wherever they were. The one-hour recording of the performance in concert version, which took place on December 1st, will be available on the same platform for three days at a symbolic price of €1.09. Subsequently, and for the following seven days, opera lovers will be able to enjoy the same performance on demand, always on payment, on the theater’s website. The operation, so far, has proved to be very successful and, on the page of the event, 29,000 Facebook users are “Going,” while other 24,000 ones are “Interested.”
