The Ferrari SF90 sets new world speed record on a ship. A 100% Italian success

Fabio Barone, the Roman driver already holding five Guinness World Records, has added another prestigious title to his collection by becoming the fastest man in the world on a ship.

Aboard a 1,000 hp Ferrari SF90 Stradale, Barone reached a top speed of 152 km/h on the deck of the aircraft carrier cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi, moored in the port of Taranto. This achievement surpassed the previous record set on September 3, 2019, by American driver Shea Holbrook, who reached a top speed of 145 km/h on the USS Hornet in a Porsche Taycan electric vehicle.

A 100% Italian success

Barone, who has been the president of the Ferrari club “Passione Rossa” for 25 years, achieved this record by combining the best of Italian excellence. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale, a hybrid car with all-wheel drive and a twin-turbo V8 engine supported by three electric motors, accomplished the feat on the deck of the Garibaldi, the historic flagship of the Italian Navy. It’s important to note that the deck of the Garibaldi is only 174 meters long, compared to the 270 meters of the USS Hornet’s deck, making Barone’s record even more remarkable. This success was also made possible by the support of Barone’s team, especially Modesto Menabue, a Ferrari veteran with 40 years of experience and 520 Formula 1 Grand Prix races.

Preparation and inclusivity

The preparation for setting the record took almost a year of work and meticulous tuning of the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, utilizing the e-manettino to provide the extra boost necessary to break the record.

The event was also an example of inclusivity, thanks to the participation of young people from the “Abilmente Insieme Onlus” association of Galatina in the “Mechanics for a Day” initiative. These differently-abled young people played an active role by unveiling the car in front of all the guests. The record was certified by the Italian Federation of Timekeepers, with the presence of race official Roberto Paolino.
