The festival, known for celebrating cinematic excellence, will also showcase Depp’s latest directorial work, Modì - Three Days on the Wings of Madness, a biopic about the renowned Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. The film stars Riccardo Scamarcio in the title role, with supporting performances from Al Pacino and French actress Pierre Niney.
Modì is described as a “72-hour whirlwind” in the life of Modigliani, focusing on a tumultuous period in Paris in 1916, just four years before the artist’s untimely death at 35. The film delves deep into the bohemian chaos that defined Modigliani’s life, showcasing the artistic genius and personal struggles that have made him a legendary figure in modern art history.
In addition to Depp’s tribute, the festival will also honor American actor Viggo Mortensen with a career achievement award. Mortensen will present his latest film, The Dead Don’t Hurt, a Western drama that he wrote, directed, and stars in. This marks another major directorial effort for Mortensen, continuing his evolution from celebrated actor to accomplished filmmaker.
The 2024 edition of the Rome Film Festival will see the return of another legendary filmmaker: Francis Ford Coppola. The veteran director will receive a special award from the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri during the Italian premiere of Megalopolis, his long-anticipated film. The screening will be held at the historic Cinecittà Studios as a ‘pre-opening’ event on October 14, just days before the festival officially begins.
