An architectural gem from the early 20th century, the former De Montel stables are located at the corner of Via Achille and Via Fetonte, just a few steps from the Meazza Stadium. The project has preserved the original structure, which is classified as a protected monument, keeping intact the valuable artistic and architectural details typical of the Art Nouveau style. The main goal has been to respect the history of the place, enhancing it through an innovative use of space.
The features of the thermal baths
What makes this thermal complex particularly interesting is the use of the so-called "acqua marcia" (sour water), a unique resource that flows beneath the city of Milan. This is sulfurous water, with strong therapeutic properties, extracted from an existing well at a depth of about 350 meters, with the water captured at 250 meters. The goal is to minimize environmental impact, with a project aiming to become one of the first green thermal centers in Europe, thanks to zero CO2 emissions.
Spaces and services
The thermal complex will offer a wide range of services across an extraordinary area: 800 square meters of indoor and outdoor pools filled with sulfurous water, capable of accommodating up to 600 people at once. This is an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating experience in a unique and evocative environment. An 8,000 square meter urban park will host saunas, pools, and relaxation areas, providing a green, refreshing space that will not only enhance the well-being of guests but also enrich the San Siro area. Additionally, 2,400 square meters of internal courtyards will offer outdoor spaces for relaxation, ensuring an intimate and tranquil atmosphere.
One of the most scenic features will be the creation of an amphitheater, where water will flow over the seating area, using the steps’ slope to create a striking visual and auditory effect. This spectacular detail will reinforce the idea of a place suspended between past and future, created to combine the historic beauty of the architecture with the most modern and sustainable technologies.
With the inauguration scheduled between late 2024 and early 2025, the former De Montel thermal baths will become the largest thermal center in any Italian city. This achievement will highlight the importance of the project, not only for Milan but also on a national level, with the aim of revolutionizing the concept of urban thermal baths by offering Milanese residents and tourists a place to relax and rejuvenate without having to leave the city.
