Prosecco, the king of Italian wines

The world's most exported wine is conquering global markets with its freshness and versatility. Here are the figures that showcase its success.

As an ambassador of Made in Italy in the international wine scene, in 2023, exports of Italian wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) surpassed €5.1 billion, with Prosecco leading the way, reaching a total value close to €1.7 billion. This extraordinary result highlights the growing popularity of this Italian sparkling wine. Despite a slight decline in purchases from the United States, its primary export market, the United Kingdom and France delivered strong performances. Notably, France recorded a 31.2% increase in Prosecco purchases compared to 2022, proving that even the home of Champagne is increasingly appreciating the sparkling wines from Veneto and Friuli.

Prosecco is a sparkling wine mainly produced in the northeastern regions of Italy. It is made using the Martinotti-Charmat method, which involves fermentation in large pressurized tanks, ensuring a finer mousse and a fresh, fruity taste. The main grape variety is Glera, which imparts aromas of green apple, pear, white flowers, and subtle citrus notes. Depending on the sugar content, Prosecco can be classified as Brut, Extra Dry, or Dry, and it comes in either sparkling or semi-sparkling versions.

Prosecco’s global success is due to its versatility. It is perfect as an aperitif, pairs well with light dishes such as fish, vegetables, and appetizers, and is ideal for celebrating special occasions without breaking the bank. Its lively character and lightness make it appealing to a broad audience, from casual drinkers to connoisseurs. In recent years, the Prosecco Protection Consortium has placed increasing emphasis on sustainability, promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices. As a result, organic and low-impact versions are becoming more widespread, catering to the growing demand for green products among international consumers.

Ultimately, Prosecco continues to be the undisputed star of the global wine market, proudly representing Italian excellence. Its bubbles keep winning over more and more enthusiasts, solidifying its status as the world’s most beloved Italian wine.
