The queen of Langhe is round and delicate; it is the P.G.I. Piedmont Hazelnut.
It is the symbol of Alta Langa, a product of absolute excellence, and it is considered the best hazelnut in the world thanks to its organoleptic characteristics and its processing chain.
The “Nocciola del Piemonte”, or “Nocciola Piemonte” (Piedmont hazelnut), denomination indicates the fruit in shell, shelled or semi-finished product of the “Tonda Gentile Trilobata” variety, which is cultivated in only a few areas of Piedmont: hilly areas, bottom of hills area and the piedmont areas of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato.
The P.G.I. Piedmont Hazelnut must be round and trilobed, with a caliber between 17 and 21 mm, and with a shell of average thickness and medium intensity hazelnut color. Once shelled it has a caliber between 11 and 15 mm, a compact and crisp flesh with penetrating and persistent flavors and aromas. The P.G.I. (Protected Geographical Indication) denomination is a guarantee, for users and consumers, of the product’s quality and authenticity. It also certifies the area of production of the hazelnuts and ensures the respect of their extraordinary characteristics throughout the processing chain.
