Guadagnino’s ‘Suspiria’ shortlisted for the Oscars

All the nominations of the 91st edition of the Academy Awards will be announced on January 22nd, about a month before the awards ceremony, which will take place on February 24th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. However, the organization announced the movies that are still running to be nominated in nine of the 2019 Oscars categories. Among the Luca Guadagnino’s remake of ‘Suspiria’ appears in the shortlist for Music (original song) and Makeup and hairstyling.

Forty-one years after its debut in cinemas in 1977 ‘Suspiria’ is still one of the undisputed masterpieces of Dario Argento and Guadagnino decided to honor it with a remake. In new supernatural horror movie written by David Kajganich, darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist.

The movie’s soundtrack is by Thom Yorke and the song ‘Suspirium’ is one of the fifteen songs voted by the Music Branch to advance in the Original Song category for the 91st Academy Awards. While the work of the 29 artists part of the movie’s makeup department will be evaluated by the members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch, who on January 5th will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from ‘Suspiria’ and the other six shortlisted movies to nominate three of them for final Oscar consideration.
