Formula 1 returns to Imola after 14 years

On November 1st, the Emilia Romagna GP will be the third race of the Formula 1 calendar in Italy

It’s official: Imola joins the 2020 Formula 1 calendar. There will be three Grand Prix run in Italy this season. In addition to the usual appointment in Monza and the surprise entry of Mugello, Imola has also found space in the F1 calendar. On November 1st, the Emilia Romagna GP will be the third race to be run in the Belpaese and will be the last European round before leaving for the Middle East. Also confirmed the GP of Nürburgring and Portimão.

The map of the circuit

For the Autodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit, the one renamed for the occasion Emilia Romagna GP will be the 27th race in the F1 history.

It is a comeback after its exit in 2006 when Michael Schumacher triumphed with his Ferrari. The Imola circuit is also linked to one of the most dramatic pages in the history of motor racing. On May 1st, 1994, Ayrton Senna died as a result of an accident that occurred during the race and the Austrian Roland Ratzenberger also lost his life that same weekend.

Stefano Bonaccini, President of Emilia Romagna, commented: “F1 is indissolubly linked to this land. It’s a history made of brands and manufacturers, of the Imola circuit and other opportunities. We are really happy, excited, and proud. It was a unique opportunity to be seized. And we’re confident that someone will be able to go to watch the race, we’re working for both Misano and Imola. Clearly, we are determined that this will not remain a unicum, in the meantime, we take this opportunity, but we also make sure to work so that it can become a stable opportunity for the coming years.

While,  F1 CEO Chase Carey said: “We are pleased that we continue to make strong progress in finalizing our plans for the 2020 season and are excited to welcome Nürburgring, Portimao, and Imola to the revised calendar.” Adding, “We want to thank the promoters, the teams, and the FIA for their full support in our efforts to bring our fans exciting racing this season.
