This highly anticipated event will take place in two phases: from June 27 to July 31 and from August 18 to October 16.
Described as a “***marble book”***, this extraordinary floor is the result of a complex iconographic program involving numerous artists from the 14th to the 19th century. Among the most famous contributors are Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo, Matteo di Giovanni, Domenico Beccafumi, and Pinturicchio. The latter is renowned for his panel “Monte della Sapienza,” which depicts the path to Virtue and inner serenity.
Giovanni Minnucci, Rector of the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena, highlighted that viewing the 56 floor panels can be a moment of personal reflection, a respite from daily concerns, in search of the meaning of one’s life. In addition to the floor unveiling, visitors will also have the chance to see the choir and apse of the Cathedral, which house the wooden inlays by Fra Giovanni da Verona, created using a technique similar to marble inlay.
The unveiling of the floor has been promoted by the Opera della Metropolitana and is organized by Opera Laboratori. Guided tours in various languages are planned, allowing visitors to deepen their knowledge of this extraordinary masterpiece. Additionally, an official catalog, published by Sillabe, is available, exploring the historical-artistic aspects and the profound themes of the inlays.
